An example of Sense of Community
An example of Sense of Community in Telluride, Colorado happened on Monday, October 4th. The Annual Kevin Green Golf Tournament, held at the Telluride Championship Golf Course.
First its important to recognize Kevin Green. Kevin was a player in the 1980's for the first Telluride Lizard Head Men's Hockey Teams. Then he became a coach, and coached his son Chase in the Youth program. He was a Volunteer Firefighter, and a fabulous skier known for pioneering backcountry lines. He died tragically on the Ski Resort many years ago.
Now the tournament. This annual fundraiser raises money for the Lizard Head Youth Hockey Club and nets them approximately $20,000 per year. The support for Kevin and the Club is amazing. From the Telluride Ski and Golf Resort allowing use of its private golf course, to the sponsors (yes I am one) to the players and donations of many prizes, its truly a special day.
The Hockey Club uses the funds to pay coaches, give scholarships to deserving kids, bring in guest coaches and hockey camps and generally defer the costs of such an expensive sport.
This is just one example of probably over 100 annual events at a variety of levels that enables Telluride to have such a positive sense of community.
Without this type of commitment by many locals, tourists, and second homeowners, simply put, Telluride would not be the special pace that it is.
Look at that turnout!
